WOLFSBURG, Feb 19 - George I. Blattenberger, aged 46, died yesterday at his home here, following a long illness.

He was a son of Adam P. and Sara (Croyle) Blattenberger and was born October 28, 1887, in Fishertown.

Surviving are his mother and these brothers and sisters: Harry Blattenberger of Osterburg; Robert Blattenberger, at home; Charles Blattenberger of Fishertown; Mrs. Fanny Urban of Altoona; Mrs. Catherine Adams of Scalp Level; Mrs. Margaret Russell of Bedford; Mrs. Nellie Blair, at home; Mrs. Ada Rinninger of Reynoldsdale and Mrs. Rolla Bender of Blairsville.

Services at the Fishertown Reformed Church. Interment in the church cemetery in charge of Howard Barefoot, mortician.

ALUM BANK VETERAN, 24, KILLED IN AUTO CRASH NEAR BEDFORD
JAMES RININGER DIES INSTANTLY AS CAR HITS TWO UTILITY POLES
James R. Rininger of Alum Bank, 24-year-old Korean war veteran, was killed instantly early Sunday morning on Route 220 about 4 1/2 miles north of Bedford, when the car he was driving left the highway and snapped off two telephone poles about 100 feet apart.

Rininger was alone in the car at the time. He was pronounced dead by Dr. Gordon E. Snyder of New Milford, who also was driving along Route 220 and who came upon the scene of the crash only moments after it occurred. Dr. Snyder said that the victim was probably killed instantly. He was found to have received a fractured skull, fractured ribs and a fractured left arm.

State police set damage to the Rininger car at about $1200.

Young Rininger, the son of the late Fred D. and Ada (Blattenberger) Rininger, was born in East St. Clair township January 8, 1930.

He was one of five brothers who saw service during World War II and the Korean War. One brother, Ralph, was killed in World War II and Rininger-Hartle American Legion Post 9219, which will conduct military funeral services Tuesday, is named in Ralph's Honor.

WAS NOT MARRIED
The accident victim was not married. His mother survives, along with these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Ruth Otto and Dean, both of Pleasantville; Walter of Corry; Frank and Ned, both of Bedford; Mrs. Ethel McCarty of Wyandot, Mich., and Miss Sara Rininger of Chester. Two brothers preceded him in death.

James Rininger served two years overseas during the Korean war and saw service in Japan and on the Korean peninsula. Since his discharge from the military service he had been employed by the Bethlehem Steel Co. in Johnstown.

legi??? ??? the Alum Bank post will set as pallbearers at military funeral services to be held at the Geisel Funeral Home in Pleasantville at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Thomas Garner will officiate. Interment will be in the Fishertown Cemetery.

John Hontas Blattenberger was a farmer and later, a brick layer. He lived on a farm at Fishertown in Bedford County for several years. Shortly after 1900, he moved to Springhope in Bedford County with his wife's mother where he remained the rest of his life. His favorite pastime was playing his violin, a hand-made fiddle from colonial days with maple pegs and pearl studs. John died of gangrene at Roaring Spring Hospital in Blair County.

FISHERTOWN, Oct. 30 - Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth (Zeigler) Blattenberger, 49, wife of John Blattenberger, who died Saturday morning at her home in Spring Hope, near here, were conducted this afternoon in the Reformed Church here. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Blattenberger was a daughter of Henry and Susan Zeigler and was born February 22, 1865.

She is survived by her husband; three sons - Ralph Blattenberger of Hooversville; Harper Blattenberger of Bedford and Clyde Blattenberger at home - and five daughters - Mrs. Anna Suter of New Paris; Mrs. Jennie Hissong of Altoona; Mrs. Goldie Ling of Johnstown; Mrs. Sue Wiltse of Bedford and Mrs. Effie Miller of Wolfsburg.

She was a sister of George Zeigler of Fishertown and Charles Zeigler of St. Clairsville.

After spending a short time in a hospital, Lena L. Blattenberger decided that a career in nursing was what she wanted. She graduated from nursing school in the class of 1918 and was considered a very efficient nurse by the doctors who worked with her. During the flu epidemic she nursed many people with the disease and finally came down with it herself. She returned home, slowly dying from the terrible complications. Her sister Sue came home to take care of her. Lena died at the age of 29.

A well known trained nurse, died on last Wednesday night at 11 o'clock at the home of her parents at Spring Hope, this county, following an illness of one years duration of a complication of diseases. Miss Blattenberg was a graduate nurse of the Mercy hospital and had practiced her profession in Altoona for some time following her graduation.

The young woman was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Blattenberger of Spring Hope and was aged 29 years.

Her kindness made her highly esteemed by patients and friends and associates. She was a member of the First Luttheran Church of Altoona.

Surviving relatives are the parents and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Anna Suter, New Paris; Ralph, Hooverville, Cambria county; Mrs. Jennie Hyssong, Altoona; Mrs. Goldie Ling, Johnstown; Mrs. Effie Miller, Fyan; Susan, Conrad and Clyde, residing at home.

The funeral will be held from the home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, with burial made in the Fishertown cemetery. Six of her associate nurses from the hospital were in attendance at the funeral.

He lived with his widowed father at Springhope for many years. In 1921 and 1933 he was reported to be living in Spring Hope, PA. When his father died he went to live with his sister, Golda, at Johnstown. During the war he held down several jobs. After Golda's death he spent the last years of his life at an old folk's home. In 1945 he was reported to be living in Johnstown, PA. Clyde never married or had children.

In 1900 Abram Blattenberger (indexed as Alva Clattenberger), b. Feb 1856, age 44, a stone mason, was living along Locust St. in Roaring Spring, Blair Co., PA, with his wife, Mary Blattenberger, b. Nov 1857, age 42, and five of their children:
- daughter Lucy Blattenberger, b. May 1882, age 18, a laborer in a paper mill
- son Jessie Blattenberger, b. Jan 1884, age 16, a cigar maker
- daughter Fannie Blattenberger, b. Jan 1886, age 14, at school
- son Daniel Blattenberger, b. Jun 1887, age 12, at school
- daughter Maggie Blattenberger, b. May 1892, age 8, at school
Abram and Mary had been married for 24 years. Mary was the mother of 9 children, of whom 6 were living in 1900. Also listed in their household was a boarder, Wilfred D. Gates, b. Jul 1898, age 1. Ralph Henry Blattenberger [Parents] was born on 25 Sep 1886 in Springhope, Bedford Co., PA. He died on 19 Mar 1948 in Winber, Somerset Co., PA and was buried on 22 Mar 1948 in Richland Cemetery, Johnstown RD 1, Geistown, Richland Twp., Cambria Co., PA. Ralph married Myrtle Carrie Ickes in 1915.

Ralph H. Blattenberger left home at an early age to work as a laborer on building projects. While trying to thaw out several sticks of dynamite, one exploded and blew off his right hand and blinded him in one eye. He recovered at Windber Hospital. He later drove a beer truck in Windber in Somerset County, PA.

He was remembered by his nieces and nephews as the uncle who wore a big black hook on his right arm. He delighted in scaring the children with it. After retirement he lived in the country near Windber where he kept blind ponies rescued from the mines, goats, and other animals. He had no children. In 1921, 1933 and 1945 he was reported to be living at Hooverville, Cambria Co., PA.

In 1917 Ralph Blattenberger, age 30, born 26 September 1886 in Bedford Co., PA, was living at 1604 Vale Ave., Windber, PA, and was employed as a miner by the John Lochrie Coal Co., Windber. His nearest relative was his wife. (WW I draft registration)

In 1920 Ralph H. Blattenberger (listed as Blattenberg), age 33, a teamster - lumber, was living in Shade Twp., Somerset Co., PA, with his wife, Myrtle C. Blattenberger, age 37. Also listed in their household was Myrtle's father, John H. Ickes, age 63, a carpenter. All were born in PA. (1920 census, microfilm roll T625_1653, Page 5B, house #98, family #104)

In 1930 Ralph H. Blattenberger, age 43, a teamster - general hauling, was living in Quemahoning Twp., Somerset Co., PA, with his wife, Carrie M. Blattenberger, age 47. Ralph had been married at the age of 23 and Carrie at the age of 27. Also listed in their household was a niece, Myrtle M. Ickes, age 11. All were born in PA. (1930 census, microfilm roll 2149. Page 21A, house #418, family #420)

In 1940 Ralph H. Blattenberger, age 53, a foreman - highway maintenance, was living in Quemahoning Twp., Somerset Co., PA, with his wife, Myrtle C. Blattenberger, age 57. Both were born in PA. (1940 census, microfilm roll T627_3610, Page 6A, household #110)

In 1942 Ralph Henry Blattenberger, age 55, born 25 September 1886 in Bedford Co., PA, was living at RD #1, Hooversville, Somerset Co., PA, and was employed by the Departmen of Highways. The person who would always know his address was Mrs. Myrtle Blattenberger, of the same address. (WW II draft registration)
