People who remember Margaret (Stroh) Blattenberger say she smoked a small clay pipe and that she grew and cured her own tobacco.
Most sources show that Margaret's maiden name was "Straw". However, it may have been "Stroh". In 1994 Omara Blattenberger wrote "The actual name of this family was Stroh, a la the beer, not necessarily related. The name most likely was Anglicized from the original German ancestry due to strong anti-German semitism of Hessians during the Revolutionary War. Another possibility for the name change may stem from the high illiteracy of the native English language by these early German immigrants in America. With a strong German accent, the pronunciation of "Stroh" may have been recorded as "Straw". (Spring issue (Vol. 1, No. 1) of the "Blattenberger/Plattenberger Family Quarterly")
