An unconfirmed report states James was forced to flee temporarily to Canada due to his son's involvement with the infamous brigade led by Colonel Shelby.

Capt. J. Q. Plattenburg, a well known citizen of this city, died Friday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, at the Morris Hotel, where he was brought two weeks ago from a hospital in Kansas City.
The deceased was born in Dover, February 25, 1846, and was 75 years of age. He was a veteran of the Civil war, serving in Shelby's brigade, and rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and of the Lexington Camp, U.C.V., No. 68, being Commander of the Camp at the time of his death. Capt. Plattenburg was never married.
The survivors are four brothers and one sister, as follows: J. S., and Henry Plattenburg of Cassville, Mo.; Harvey Plattenburg of Dover, Mo.; Walter Plattenburg of Kansas City, and Mrs. Spence Brown, of Waverly. One niece, Mrs. Irwin Donovan, of Muskogee, Okla., also survives him.
The funeral was held at Dover 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

John W. Plattenburg served in the Civil War as a Private in G Company, First Virginia Infantry from 30 Sept. 1861 to the end of the war, 19 July 1865. He had re-enlisted on 8 Feb 1964 under GO 191 Series of 1863. After the war, he moved to Ohio and soon married. He moved again in October 1885, this time buying 890 acres in Franklin County, Tennesee for $890. (Deed Book 3, pg. 165)
On 22 November 1888 John W. Plattenberg applied for a veterans pension for his service during the civil war. On 14 February 1896 his widow, Kate Plattenburg filed an application for his pension.

After the death of Harriet, James Ferguson is believed to have remarried a woman by the name of Dorcus Brown, who may have drowned in the Mississippi River, during the Civil War, when the ship sank while trying to run the Yankee blockade.
Ferguson descendants report that James Ferguson is something of a mystery. He was not mentioned in his father's will and married two Yankees, both from Ohio. James never fought in the Civil War, but was reportedly sympathetic to the Confederate cause. His father was in the railroad business. By the 1870's, James was working in Port Sullivan, Texas. He later moved to Hearne, Texas.
Harriet Plattenburg [Parents] was born on 10 Jun 1827 in VA. She died on 30 Jun 1855 and was buried on 3 Jul 1855 in Methodist Cemetery, Fairview, OH. Harriet married James Ferguson on 22 Jul 1851 in Fairview, Guernsey Co., OH.
According to stories passed down in the Plattenburg family, Harriet, against her parent's advice, went to Selma, AL, to visit her uncle, Wesley Plattenburg. While in Selma, she met and married James Ferguson, who was living near Wesley.
According to some family records, Harriet was "Lost off Cape Hatteras in 1855."
Her son, Wesley Ferguson reported that in 1855, while in route with her two children from Mobile, Al (where she was living with her husband, James), she contracted cholera- probably after leaving Louisville by boat. After arriving at Cincinnatti she was carried to the home of her cousin, Alfred Plattenburg, where she passed away.Harriet's name appears on a tombstone at Fairview, Ohio. However, it is not certain if she is actually buried there. After her death, her children were raised by her parents, George and Eliza Plattenburg, in Oxford Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio. Harriet's husband, James Ferguson, remarried.
