Helen Frances Baker [Parents] was born on 16 Oct 1912 in Liberty Twp., Warren Co., IA. She died on 4 Nov 2003 in Warren Co., IA and was buried in Liberty Center Cemetery, Liberty Center, Warren Co., IA. Helen married Guy I. Lester on 22 Mar 1934 in Winterset, IA.
In 1993 Helen (Baker) Lester was living at 2242 145th Ave., Milo, Iowa, 50166.
Helen remembers "I have seen many great changes in my lifetime from mud roads and very few cars to paved roads and air flights to any place you wish to go.
I was born near Liberty Center, Warren County, Iowa, in a rural home where my parents lived almost 70 years. The house had two rooms upstairs and four down with a screened porch. It was plain but neat. It still stands with additions and improvements. Two great grandchildren live there at present.
I have a brother, Walker Baker, who lives near here. We both live within three miles of the farm George Blattenberg purchased in 1862 when he came to Warren County.
One of the most vivid and pleasant memories of my childhood is visiting my grandmother Hannah, my father's mother, who lived in the big, square, white house a half mile up the road. She died when I was 14 years old, but she left great memories for me and all who knew her.
One sad experience I had at her house was being present when my great grandmother, Mary, who was knitting socks by the kitchen window, slumped from her chair to the floor. Grandma Hannah asked if I thought I could go the the barn and get Frank who was milking the cows. It was a cold, rainy November
morning, but I made it although I was only six years old. The funeral was held in the family home. My future husband's grandfather, M.E. Young, a primitive Baptist, conducted the funeral services.I attended a country school and often walked home for my lunch. I went to Liberty Center High School and two years to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. I taught school one year and then married Guy Lester, a friend from high school days, in 1934.
Guy and I belong to the Green Plain United Methodist Church, a country church that we have attended for 43 years.
We are Democrats but vote for the candidate that, in our opinion, is the best person.
We have traveled in all but three states plus Europe and the British Isles. We loved the Rhine River boat trip where our ancestors traveled as they started to the United States many years ago.
Mercury cars seem to be a good choice for our way of traveling since they are not too fancy but dependable.
Most of our family live in a cluster (you might say) so it is easy for us to be together for picnics, family gatherings, Christmas, and many Sunday night suppers.
I love to cook especially for my grandchildren. Homemade dinner rolls, steak or turkey with plenty of mashed potatoes and gravy are favorites.
We have a family room with an attractive stone fire place at one end. One or more of our grandchildren are often on the floor enjoying the warmth and beauty of the fire.
Guy and I have collected antiques for many years. Our special interests include Indian artifacts such as stone axes, arrows, trade beads, and baskets. Recently turtles are also of much interest to Guy."
