He died on 12 Apr 1919 in Mt. Vernon, Linn Co., IA and was buried on 16 Apr 1919 in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Linn Co., IA. Robert married Emma Wetzel on 30 Dec 1885 in Lisbon, Linn Co., IA.

Robert Charles Plattenberger was baptized by Brother John Jacob Regennas. The sponsors at his baptism were Alfred Danke and his wife, Susan, and Robert Clewell. (Moravian Church, Schoeneck, Register Book #3, pg. 81, Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, PA)

Around 1893 Robert and his family moved to Blue Springs, Nebraska. After their farm crop was eaten by grasshoppers and the drought continued, they returned to Lisbon, Iowa in 1895 by covered wagon. He continued to farm most of his life. Around 1904 Robert and his wife, Emma, moved from Lisbon to Mount
Vernon, where they joined the Presbyterian Church. He served as trustee of three years and was elected to the eldership.

Emma Wetzel [Parents] was born on 7 Sep 1866 in Northampton Co., PA. She died on 18 Apr 1942 in Mt. Vernon, Linn Co., IA and was buried on 20 Apr 1942 in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Linn Co., IA. Emma married Robert Charles Plattenberger on 30 Dec 1885 in Lisbon, Linn Co., IA.

Emma (Wetzel) Plattenberger was an active member in the Presbyterian Church at Mt. Vernon. She was chairman of the music committee and was superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years. She was also a member of the order of Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary.

Emma died at her home on North 4th St. in Mt. Vernon and is buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. (Obit in newspaper from scrapbook of Nellie Plattenberger)

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Mrs. Emma Plattenberger who passed away Saturday afternoon at her home in Mount Vernon. Rev. Joseph Gray, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the service in the Presbyterian Church. Burial was in the Mount Vernon cemetery. Howard Johnston was in charge.

Mrs. Emma Plattenberger, 75 years, 7 months, 11 days, passed away Saturday, April 18th at 1:30 o'clock p.m. at her little home on North 4th St. after an illness of 2 weeks. She became very ill while preparing to attend Easter service.

Mrs. Plattenberger was born Sept. 7, 1866 in Northampton county, Penn. She was the third child of Jacob and Almena Wetzel. Mrs. Plattenberger was still a very small child when the Wetzels moved to Lisbon. On December 3rd, 1885 she was united in marriage to Robert Charles Plattenberger and lived in Lisbon and vicinity until 1904, when the family moved to Mount Vernon, all joining the Presbyterian churcn. Mrs. Plattenberger was a very active member in the various organizations, being chairman of the music committee and was Superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years. Se was also a member of the order of Eastern Star and American Legion Auxilary.

Mr. Plattenberger and a daughter Olive preceded her in death. She is survived by two son, Earl of Long Beach, Calif., Luther of Mount Vernon; one daughter Myrtle DuBois , of Long Beach, Calif., also six grandchildren, four great granddaughters; two sisters, Margaret and Ella Wetzel, of Chicago, Ill., one brother Luther Wetzel of Stanley and a host of neighbors and friends.

Luther Plattenberger
Luther W. Plattenberger, 86, a former resident of Mt. Vernon, died in the Anamos Community hospital Thursday morning following a long illness.

Mr. Plattenberger was born Feb. 17, 1895 at Blue Springs, Neb. He came to the Lisbon/Mt. Vernon area when a small child. Attended public schools and the Cornell academy before serving with the Army in World War I.

He was married to Leila Barker Dec. 29, 1920 in Mt. Vernon. She died Sept. 9, 1979.

He was a farmer for many years in the Mt. Vernon, Martelle area until his retirement. He was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years serving as an elder, the Howard-Hahn Legion Post and the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #112.

Surviving are a so, Robert F. Plattenberger and a daughter, Mrs. Ellis Lambertsen, both of Martelle, seven grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

LEILA PLATTENBERGER
Leila A. Plattenberger, 81, died Sunday Sept. 9 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Born March 7, 1898, at Villisca, IA, she was the daughter of Frederick Barker and Grace E. Barr Barker.

She attended Cornell College and taught school in the Clarinda area. On Dec. 29, 1920, she married Luther Plattenberger in her mother's home. She and Mr. Plattenberger lived all their married life in the Mt. Vernon vicinity, and have spent the past three years as residents of Martelle.

Mr. Plattenberger was an extremely active member of the United Presbyterian Church, having arranged for altar flowers for weekly services over a period of many years. In additionn, she was the first woman elder, a deaconess, and president of UPW during her 60 year membership. She was also a member of the New Century club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Luther; one son, Robert and a daughter Mrs. Ellis (Mary Carol) Lambertson, both of Martelle; seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Karl Kettering, Lisbon.

Services were to be held Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Burnettt and Dr. Dwight Vogel officiating. Pall bearers include Jared Bauch, Robert Mahraun, Richard Gilmore, David D. Lambertsen, Dan E. Lambersen and Fred Niehaus. A memorial fund has been established.
