17 Jul 2007: Edward M. Barilla, Sr., 80, Middletown died Saturday at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Philip and Maude E. Sheaffer Barilla.

He was a graduate of Middletown High School. Edward was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy. He retired from Edwin L. Heim Co. where he was an electrician. Edward was a member of Swatara Church of God. He was the husband of Rose Lubic Barilla.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons Edward M., Jr. husband of Takae Barilla, Dallas, TX, Arthur E. husband of Seranda Barilla, Middletown; grandchildren Dawn, Patricia and Edward M. III; great-granddaughters Natalie, Summer, Gabrielle, Paige and Dakota; and brothers Charles Philip Barilla, and Robert E. Barilla, both of Middletown.

Funeral at Coble-Reber Funeral Home, Middletown, Wednesday, July 18. Interment Middletown Cemetery.

Rose L. Barilla, 75, of Middletown, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at the Harrisburg Hospital. She was the wife of the late Edward M. Barilla, Sr., who died July 14, 2007.

Born in Harrisburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Florence Kelly Lubic.

Rose was a homemaker and retired hairdresser. She was a member of the Swatara Church of God and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Lower Swatara Fire Company. She enjoyed knitting, crafts and ceramics.

Surviving are two sons, Edward M. Jr., husband of Takae Barilla, Dallas, TX and Arthur E., husband of Randie Barilla, Middletown; 3 grandchildren, Dawn, Patricia and Edward M. III; 5 great-grandchildren, Natalie, Summer, Gabrielle, Paige and Dakota; two brothers, Paul and Ted Lubic; a sister, Patricia Sallinger. She was preceded in death by a brother, Don Lubic and a sister, Edith (Wee) Forney.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Rose's Life Celebration from the Coble-Reber Funeral Home, 208 N. Union Street, Middletown, on Friday, April 11, 2008 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Terry O. Frederick officiating. Interment will be in Middletown Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m., until time of service.

Charles married Phyllis Marie Updegraff on 26 Jul 1947 in Middletown, Dauphin Co., PA.

Charles P. Barilla served in the US Army from 5 March 1943 to 2 November 1946.

Charles P. "Phil" Barilla, 89, of Middletown, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Phyllis M. Updegraff Barilla, who died May 17, 2002.

Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late Phillip A. and Maude Schaeffer Barilla.

Phil was retired from The Commonwealth of PA, where he worked as an electrician for 20 years and also retired from the former Olmsted Air Force Base, where he had worked 25 years. He was a U.S. Army, Battle of the Bulge veteran of WWII. Phil returned from WWII after earning a Bronze Star and enlisted in the PA National Guard serving during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post #594, Middletown. Phil loved cars, and enjoyed meticulously caring for his home and yard.

Surviving are two children, Gaye M. Turpin (Irv) and Charles "Chuck" Barilla (Sue), both of Middletown; a brother, Robert Barilla (Barbara) of Middletown; 4 grandchildren, Michelle Heaster, Megan Sommer (Lazslo), Kelly Hurst (Norm) and Doug Carpenter (Erica) and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Barilla.

She was a homemaker, although she had worked for the Middletown Press and Journal, as a Line-O-type Operator. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was the wife of Charles "Phil" Barilla . She is survived by a daughter, Gaye M. and her husband Irvin Turpin; and a son Charles "Chuck" Barilla , both of Middletown; a sister, Nance Updegraff of Royalton; two grandchildren, Michele and Megan; and two great-grandchildren, Emily and Joshua. She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Wingert.

In 1917 Charles Philip Sheaffer, age 27, born 20 April 1890 in Middletown, PA, was living at Burd, Royalton, PA, and was employed as a steam hammer operator for Middletown Car Co., Middletown, PA. He was married with a wife but no children. (WW I draft registration)

In 1920 Charles P. Shaeffer, b. in PA, age 30, a drill press operator at a car shop, was living along Penn St. in Royalton, Dauphin Co., PA, with his wife, Ruth A. Shaeffer, b. in PA, age 25. Also listed in their household were Ruth's brother, Leroy J. Daugherty, b. in PA, age 30, divorced, a car builder in a car shop, and a boarder, Leslie A. In 1930 Charles P. Sheaffer, age 39, a laborer at the air depot, was living at 222 Water St. in Middletown, Dauphin Co., PA, with his wife, Ruth A. Sheaffer, age 34, a beauty culturist with her own shop. Charles had been married at the age of 27 and Ruth at the age of 22. They were listed in the household of Charles' parents,
Levi (listed as Lee) H. Sheaffer, age 59, an engine helper - Capitol, and his wife, Alice K. Sheaffer, age 58. Lee had been married at the age of 20 and Alice at the age of 19. All were born in PA. (1930 census, microfilm roll 2028, Page 9B, house #227, family #246)

In 1940 Charles P. Sheaffer, age 49, a packer shipping clerk at the Government Air Depot, was living at 222 W. Water St. in Middletown, Dauphin Co., PA, with his wife, Ruth Sheaffer, age 45, a beauty operator in a retail beauty shop. Also listed in their household was Charles' mother, Alice Sheaffer, age 69, a widow. All were born in PA. (1940 census, microfilm roll T627_3484, Page 1A, household #5)

In 1942 Charles Philip Sheaffer, age 52, born 20 April 1890 in Middletown, PA, was living at 222 W. Water St., Middletown, Dauphin Co., PA, and was employed by Jacob Sides in the shipping department of Middletown Air Depot. The person who would always know his address was Mrs. Charles P. Sheaffer, of the same address. (WW II draft registration)
