TWO MEN KILLED WHEN CAR STRIKES ANOTHER AND UPSETS
Hope-Bridgeville Road Scene of Double Fatal Accident Early Last Saturday Evening
Henry H. Stine, 59, of Phillipsburg, and Clark E. Boerstler, 38, of Nazareth, were killed early last Saturday evening when the automobile in which they were traveling on the Bridgeville-Hope road upset in front of the farm of James Frome. Boerstler, the driver, was killed instantly. Stine died on his way to Warren Hospital, Phillipsburg.A slight collision with another automobile traveling in the same direction was the cause of the fatal accident. The two men were artesian well diggers, and had been working at the home of Clarence Jones, of Johnsonburg. They were traveling at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses.
The place where the accident occurred is at the foot of a slight incline near a curve on the concrete road leading from Hope to Bridgeville. Boerstler, in attempting to pass a machine driven by Fred Matthews, of Lambertville, hooked the latter's left rear mud guard. Boerstler was traveling in a light car and the impact with the other machine forced him to travel diagonally across the road. In this manner the machine skidded across the highway and when it left the concrete it turned over twice, hurdled a stone wall and landed in a field. The men were thrown out, both of them striking on their heads. Fractured skulls were given as the cause of death in each case.
An examination of the machine after it had been removed to a garage in Hope showed that the steering gear had locked.
A boy working on the Frome farm saw the accident and immediately summoned help. County Physician Cummins was called from Belvidere and Trooper Austin from Washington. Charles Fichtel, of Oxford, was also on the scene in a short time.
Stine still showed signs of life and Dr. Cummins ordered him placed in a truck driven by Harold Scholz, of Belvidere, and taken to the hospital. Scholz had traveled only a short distance when he was met by the ambulance from Warren Hospital. Stine was transferred to the ambulance but he died before it reached Belvidere.
Both bodies were removed to the morgue of Undertaker Van Blarcom, of Belvidere. Boerstler's body was claimed on Saturday night and Stine's body was removed on Sunday afternoon. Dr. Cummins issued certificates of accidental death.
In the Matthews machine were Mrs. Fred Matthews, Miss Julia Hoffman, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wilson all of Lambertville. They were allowed to proceed after they had furnished Trooper Austin with all the particulars. Their machine was only slightly damaged. A bent fender was the extent of the damages.
Stine resided at 390 Washington street, Phillipsburg. He is survived by his wife, seven children, Floyd and George Stine, of Easton, Lillian, Harry, Florence, Stanley and Ruth Stine, of Phillipsburg, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Stine, of Easton.
Boerstler resided with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Boerstler, 220 Prospect street, Nazareth. He was unmarried. Besides his parents he leaves two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Howard Kessler, Nazareth; Mrs. William Doninger, Philadelphia, Charles Boerstler, Easton, and William Boerstler Jr., Nazareth.
Boerstler was a member of the Moravian church at Nazareth, Odd Fellows and Elks Lodge of Easton, Eagles Lodge, Bethlehem, Harold V. Knecht Post, No. 415, American Legion, Nazareth, and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Pottsville. The funeral will be held from the home of his parents on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
