Donald H. Goss, age 84 of Savanna, Illinois, died Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna with Reverend Michael Wey officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. Military rites will be accorded by the Savanna V.F.W. Post# 2223. A memorial fund has been established in Don's memory.Don was born on July 29, 1926, the son of Horace L. and Florence (Cook) Goss in Potosi, Wisconsin. He attended Savanna High School, graduating with the Class of 1944. Don served his country in the United States Air Corp during World War II. He married Dolores Thulen on October 7, 1944. She later died on April 6, 1980. Don then married Betty J. Leavens Bradley on June 12, 1981 in Savanna.
Don worked as a Mechanic for the Milwaukee Railroad for thirty five years, before retiring in 1977. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna. Don enjoyed helping others and volunteered as a C.N.A. at Big Meadows Nursing Home. He also enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Most of all, Don loved spending time with his family and friends.
Don will be dearly missed by his wife, Betty of Savanna; three sons, Robert (Pam) Goss of Savanna, James Goss of Savanna and Steven Bradley of Clover, Wisconsin; five daughters, Joyce (Dick) Arno of Savanna, Donna Schuyler of Rock Island, Illinois, Barbara (Dick) Collins of Savanna, Valerie (Rick) Steiner of Argyle, Wisconsin and Sandra (Dale) Mennenga of Freeport, Illinois; twenty-nine grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, one brother, Darwin (Joyce) Goss of Warsaw, Indiana; one sister in-law, Esther Goss of Rockford, Illinois; and one daughter in-law, Nancy Goss of Streator, Illinois.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dolores; one son, William Goss, Sr.; one infant daughter, Jacqueline; three grandchildren, William Goss, Jr., Joshua Mennenga and Grant Berg; one granddaughter, Heather Longmire; two great-great granddaughters, Alexia Scriven and Madison Adkison; and one brother, Wayne Goss.
