Fort Armstrong, November the 8th 1819
Dear Wife;
By this favorable opportunity I have the pleasure to inform you of my health, hoping the same of you and family. I should have wrote on before this time but opportunity would not permit of it. We have had a very fatigueing march from Detroit untill we arrived at this post. But God always favored me with health and strength and hope it may continue so untill the expiration of my time. For God knows that the time seems long to me untill I can have the pleasure to be with you and family. Entrust yourself to God and not illiterate people that are apt of raising disturbances in families. As for my part, if I return home onst more I shall consider them null. I am now abot 2000 miles from home, a beautiful station on the Mississippi, 300 miles this side of St. Louis, surrounded by nothing but Indians - - - - from twelve to fifteen hundred indians at a moment's warning of "Sacks and Fox" (?) tribes. Those were very savage, lost more towards - - - but have become nutral and tolerable decent and supply us with different kinds of game. You will give my best regards to mother and brother and all inquiring friends. You will direct your letters to St. Louis to be forwarded to Fort Armstrong to the care of Major Marston.

Your respective husband untill death,
John Blattenberger

(The above letter, written the night before John Blattenberger was killed by Indians, was sent by Randy David Pott, one of John's direct descendents. Letter deciphered by Mildred Donley.)
